About Us

Our Story

On December 10, 1957, the Full Gospel Church of God was established by the late Rev. James and Rachael Handy in the New Roads District in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies. Later they relocated to the United States of America. In 1973, Rev. Handy joined together with the late Bishop Percival Rowe, and they both decided to merge with the Full Gospel Church of God, which had already been established in Jamaica. The Headquarters of the Full Gospel Church of God was then established in Brooklyn, New York and from there they established more churches in Jamaica, with Rev. I. A. Brooks becoming the Island Overseer.

On December 16, 1973, Reverend Handy completed the purchase of a property at 142 Cooper Street, Brooklyn, NY, which became the church’s headquarters. In October 1976, a new branch was launched at 266 Reid Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, pastored by Bishop Percival Rowe, while Bishop James pastored at 142 Cooper Street. In 1979 Bishop Handy and Bishop Rowe agreed to an amicable parting, which led to Bishop Rowe establishing his own congregation under his leadership, namely, Full Gospel Church of God #2. Bishop Handy was then left with the church at Cooper Street and other churches in Jamaica. On October 31, 1979, Bishop Handy purchased a new building at 2566 Pitkin Avenue, where the current church is now housed. The branches in Jamaica subsequently left the body, some closed permanently, while others continued under different organizational structures.

Bishop Handy pastored the church for eight years, then resigned and left the church under the care of Missionary Vanetta Fairweather, Deacon Sandy Richards (deceased), Evangelist Lena Fairweather, Sister Margarita Knight (deceased), Brother Elwin Fairweather, and Deacon Victor Lodge. They managed the affairs of the church under the direction of Missionary Vanetta Fairweather for four years, while they diligently sought the Lord for a shepherd.

In April 1993, the officers and members of the church came together and selected Pastor Malcolm G. Folkes to become the pastor of the church. He pastored for 15 years and during this time the building started renovation. Also in his tenure, Pastor Folkes ordained Missionary Vanetta Fairweather to be his assistant. In  2008 Pastor Folkes parted with the church, leaving it under the care of Pastor Vanetta Fairweather.

In June 2008, the officers and members, under careful consideration, decided to transfer the organization to the auspices of the Church of God International, headquartered in Cleveland, Tennessee under the Leadership of then New York State Administrative Bishop Andrew Binda. The Full Gospel church joined fellowship with 10 churches in the District under the direction of District Overseer, Bishop Dr. R.C. Hugh Nelson. Over the course of the next 15 years, the church has seen the ordination of three credentialed ministers, Reverend Oswin Mark Fairweather, Reverend Djalma Nicholas Phillips, and Reverend Tania O. Fairweather; and Reverend Richard Cummings.
